"I DIED AND I LAUGHED..."

Some say he is a genius, others say he is crazy. Velimir Khlebnikov is the most enigmatic Russian poet with outstand- ing mathematical abilities, the Chair- man of the Globe, the Guardian of Time, who believed it was possible to live without war. Will we ever be able to comprehend his laws of time and recognize in the present those events, which he predicted exactly a century ago? A film to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the poet's death.

SYNOPSIS

Velimir Khlebnikov, an unknown poet and mathematician, arrives in a city hoping to warn its citizens of the coming war. In a literary cafe he meets the dancer Skalon. Unfortunately Velim- ir and his attempts to save the humanity are not taken seriously. By resorting to mathematics and almost sacrificing his own life, Velimir tries to save Skalon from her doom. On the way to his global goal – prediction of the future, Velimir will have to pass the test of fame and even a duel with death. According to Khlebnikov’s prophecy, in 2025 all of us will experience some kind of a very important event. This is the year when the film ends.

DIRECTOR’S INTENTION

Velimir’s Prophecy is dedicated to the predictions and laws of time of Velimir Khlebnikov with all the inherent cultural shifts, paradoxes, and most importantly, hope and faith in man. I would like to make Velimir Khlebnikov better known not only to Russian but also to foreign audiences.

Velimir wrote that you can move through time as you move through space. This idea forms the basis of the drama. Khlebnikov is a guest of time, traveling along the River Leta, and the viewer accompanies him on this mysterious journey. It begins with a monument to Khlebnikov in the steppes of Kalmykia. We look at it from today’s perspective. But as soon as we move 200 meters away, time changes in the same steppe: we find ourselves in the past 100 years ago, when the poet used to live. This is where the main story will unfold.

Velimir’s Prophecy is a film on the border with a fairy-tale. In it, the characters of Khlebnikov’s stories intersect with real people. By the way, for Khlebnikov himself, it made no difference in what time people lived and live. The main thing that connects them is his work and mathematics. For example, in our film Velimir is followed by three passers-by, the figures from Khlebnikov’s supernarrative Zangezi, who either mock the prophet of the same name or help him.

Big B is a collective image of a publicist-producer with an emphasis on the economic component of the creative process. Without such entrepreneurs, it would be very difficult for artists to be heard. If you have such power, you can be on one side or the other. So Big B will have to decide for himself throughout the film who he is: God or Baal, Mephisto, Woland.

I conceived the film as a heartfelt conversation about Velimir Khlebnikov. But what would we know about Khlebnikov without the work of biographers and Khlebnikov scholars? I want to dedicate a separate scene to them. In the final scene of the film, in the same literary café, only 100 years later, we see two experts who debate the reliability of Khlebnikov’s calculations and predictions.

PRODUCER'S NOTE

Our film is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the memory of the global thinker and poet Velimir Khlebnikov. We want to introduce to the international audience Khlebnikov’s subtle and almost untranslatable poetry, his ideas about the possibility of peaceful coexistence of nations and cultures, and to broaden the understanding of Khlebnikov’s personality for a Russian audience.

We have gone much of the way in the development of the project – in 2017 we made a location trip to the birthplace of the poet and his family in Kalmykia and Astrakhan, established a collaboration with the Khlebnikov Museum and Khlebnikov experts to study the life and work of the poet. From 2018 to 2020, the author and director Kristina Paustian collected material for an essay documentary about V. Khlebnikov, which will be released in 2021-2022.

We are convinced that Velimir’s Prophecy has a lot of potential for the global audience, taking into consideration the experience of our international team, authenticity and high artistic style of the film, and the prior interest of funds, distributors and film festivals in the film’s topic.

Velimir’s Prophecy will be the first film of international level about the world of poetry and numbers of one of the most extraordinary poets of Russia, Velimir Khlebnikov
